Layali Café

A showcase website for a specialty café where hospitality is the product — the site has to feel like the room before anyone decides to visit.

This is a Northbound showcase. Layali Café is a fictional business created by Northbound Studio to study this problem. It is not a client and has never engaged the studio.

The problem

Café sites default to a bright template with a photo grid and a PDF menu, which flattens a distinctive hospitality concept into a generic coffee shop.

Design approach

Atmosphere-first. Warm cream, walnut and brass, a display serif paired with a quiet sans, arched framing and slow editorial pacing.

What we did

  • A menu rendered as readable text and grouped by ritual: coffee, tea, desserts, plates.
  • Hours and location treated as headline information, not footer text.
  • A short origin story that explains the concept without becoming an essay.
  • Catering and private evenings given their own dedicated enquiry path.

Conversion structure

Visit intent over transaction — hours, location and a table request lead, with catering as the secondary high-value path.

What the study demonstrates

  • Atmosphere communicated in the first frame.
  • The two visit-blocking questions answered immediately.
  • Transfers to bakeries, tea houses, wine bars and boutique retail.
