Client Project Portal
An interactive system showcase built from the customer's side of the relationship — proof that Northbound builds software clients use, not only dashboards staff use.
This is a Northbound showcase. Client Project Portal is a fictional product created by Northbound Studio to study this problem. It is not a client and has never engaged the studio.
Simulated business system — fully operable inside Northbound Studio, with fictional data.
The problem
During a long build the customer has no visibility, so the project manager spends hours a week answering the same three questions by text.
Design approach
Reassurance-first. Warm surfaces, generous type and a single progress narrative, deliberately unlike an admin console.
What we did
- A progress timeline that states the current stage in plain language.
- Selections presented as decisions with a single approval action.
- Payment schedule shown in full, including what is not yet due.
- A message thread scoped to the project rather than a personal inbox.
Conversion structure
Retention and referral. A calm client asks fewer status questions and refers more often.
What the study demonstrates
- Demonstrates customer-facing product design, not just internal tooling.
- Approvals and messaging are genuinely interactive in the showcase.
- Transfers to design firms, agencies, legal and construction.
